Law Pages
Welcome
Welcome to the Desart Law Pages. The purpose of this site
is to make available information about the importance of
contracts, their purpose and some of the essential components
needed to protect the rights of you as an artist.
There are existing sites on the internet which can provide
general information about copyright, licensing and protecting
your rights over your work. In some cases draft contracts
are available to be downloaded and adjusted for use by the
general public. You will find some of these sites in the
Links section.

The Importance of Contracts
If someone approaches you to buy, use or borrow a work of
art created by you it is important to protect your rights
and make sure that you are paid appropriately and fully understand
what the person wants and what they are willing to give you
for it.
It is not always essential for you to have a contract, but
a contract is a good way of making sure that the person with
whom you are making the agreement understands the deal in
the same way you do and that you have some legal recourse
if they do not fulfil their end of the bargain. A contract
also places you under the obligation to abide by its clauses
and for this reason you must understand what the person is
asking you to do. If you do not understand a contract or
even feel confused about just part of it do not sign it.
